Phillies Falter in Finale With Red Sox

All it took was one disastrous inning to ruin any chances the Phillies had of beating the Red Sox Thursday night, losing 6-2 and dropping two of three in the home-opening series. Actually, it was a third of an inning. David Buchanan’s inability to retire the side in order in the top of the third cost him dearly when, beginning with a David Ortiz single with two outs and nobody on, Boston put up six runs and never looked back. The Phillies answered with two runs in their half of the third, but the rally ended when Ryan Howard struck out with two out and two on. Dustin McGowen, in his Phillies debut, and Justin De Fratus put together four scoreless innings to stem the tide in innings 4-7, but there wasn’t much offense to speak of from that point on for the Phillies.  For more on this game, click here.
