With OT Loss to Bruins, Flyers Salvage Point, Still Slip in Standings

* The Flyers came from behind to earn at least one standings point for the fourth consecutive game (2-0-2).

* Chris VandeVelde scored his ninth goal of the season in his 56th game. Prior to this year, he only had one career NHL goal in 46 career NHL games.

* Jake Voracek scored his 20th goal of the season, giving him a third consecutive season of 20 goals or more. He is three short of his career high of 23 goals set last year.

* The Flyers defense factored into both goals today, recording two assists (Streit & Schultz)… The defense has now posted 15 goals and 44 points in their last 21 games.

GAME RECAP

BOSTON — Brad Marchand scored the tying goal with 15 seconds left in the third period and the game-winner with 1:08 remaining in overtime, giving the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden on Saturday.

The Bruins (32-22-10) pushed the Flyers (28-25-13) five points back in the race for the second Eastern Conference wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Marchand won the game by cutting to the middle on his backhand. His shot deflected off Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto and past goaltender Steve Mason.

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask made 29 saves, and defenseman Zdeno Chara scored Boston’s other goal.

Mason made 34 saves for the Flyers, who have lost six straight games to the Bruins since April 23, 2013.

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds was called for tripping Daniel Paille with 2:03 left in the third period. The Bruins called timeout and pulled Rask to set up a 6-on-4. The Flyers survived most of it until Patrice Bergeron won a faceoff at the right dot, defenseman Dougie Hamilton’s took a wrist shot from the right point, and Marchand tipped it past Mason to tie it 2-2.

Three minutes into overtime, Jakub Voracek was stopped on a breakaway by Rask, who made a pad save.

The Bruins scored first for the seventh straight game. Chara’s wrist shot from the left point eluded traffic, including Bergeron, in front of Mason and landed in the back of the net during a power play at 7:07 of the first period.

Philadelphia tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal in the second period. Claude Giroux‘s shot from the left circle was blocked and deflected to Voracek at the right dot for a wrist shot that beat Rask into the top left corner at 9:45.

Philadelphia took advantage of a Boston icing to take the lead in the third period. Defenseman Nick Schultz‘s wrist shot from the left point was deflected by Chris VandeVelde in front and trickled through Rask at 15:30 to put the Flyers ahead 2-1.
