Report From Philadelphia Union
Chester, Pa. – Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday that forward C.J. Sapong has been officially diagnosed with a concussion and a fracture in the zygomatic bone in his left cheek. Sapong will see a specialist this week to determine the length of his rehab.
Sapong was injured near the end of the first half during the team’s season opener against Colorado Rapids on March 7. He was taken off for Cristian Maidana to start the second half.
The 26-year-old forward is in his first season with the Union. The club dealt the No. 10 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft to Sporting Kansas City to acquire his rights. Originally drafted by Sporting in 2011, Sapong was the MLS Rookie of the Year after he scored five goals and registered five assists while playing in every game that year. He followed it up in 2012 with a career-best nine goals.
