Union Announce New Signings, Play in Scoreless Friendly

Reports From Philadelphia Union

Derrick Jones, Ryan Richter Sign Short-Term Agreements

CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of Derrick Jones and Ryan Richter to short-term agreements ahead of Wednesday night’s friendly against Crystal Palace. Both members are currently with Bethlehem Steel FC and will return to the club following Wednesday’s match.

Jones has started 15 games for Bethlehem Steel FC this season. He’s registered two goals and one assist and is fourth on the team in minutes played with 1,250.  A product of the Philadelphia Union Academy, Jones became the first player to ever sign with expansion Steel FC on Dec. 3, 2015. During the 2015-16 academy season, Jones played in 12 games, started nine and scored three goals before signing his professional contract. He had eight goals in 21 starts during the 2014-15 season.

Richter has played every single minute for Steel FC this season, starting all 17 games for 1,530 minutes. The 27-year-old right back also leads Steel with three goals this season. A 2011 Supplemental Draft selection by the Union, Richter has appeared in 13 career MLS matches for Toronto FC.

MLS clubs may sign players from their USL affiliate to short-term agreements (up to four-day contracts) for CONCACAF Champions League, AMWAY Canadian Championship, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and exhibition matches. An MLS club may sign a player to a maximum of four short-term agreements each season (maximum of 16 days).

Union, Crystal Palace Battle To Scoreless Draw In Friendly

CHESTER, Pa. (July 13, 2016) – Philadelphia Union drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace of the English Premier League in front of a paid attendance of 12,881 at Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday night. Union Academy product Derrick Jones made his First Team debut as a halftime substitute. Jones had signed a short-term agreement with the Union earlier in the day.  Philadelphia returns to MLS action when they host New York Red Bulls July 17.

The friendly started off with both clubs getting acclimated with each other. Philadelphia created their best opportunity in the first 30 minutes from MLS All-Star Keegan Rosenberry. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft gathered a loose ball at the edge of the box, but his attempt sailed just over the bar.

The Union were able to gain most of the momentum in the first half thanks to the play of goalkeeper John McCarthy. The La Salle product made game-saving stops against Freddie Ladapo and Sullay Kaikai. Crystal Palace had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 35th minute, but McCarthy snatched the ball before it crossed the goal line. McCarthy finished the evening with three saves in 45 minutes.

The second half saw 10 total substitutions – nine at halftime – for the Union, including the First Team debut of Derrick Jones. Fellow Steel FC player Ryan Richter, on a short-term agreement, saw his first action with the Union in 2016 as a sub in the 77th minute of play. Matt Jones came in for John McCarthy and made two crucial saves in the span of 10 minutes. He finished the evening with three saves to secure the shutout.

The draw with Crystal Palace moved Philadelphia’s record to 5-6-1 in international friendly competitions. Philadelphia returns to MLS action this Sunday when they host New York Red Bulls in a nationally televised match. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be on Fox Sports 1.
