Report From Philadelphia 76ers
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – AUGUST 18, 2014 – The Philadelphia 76ers announced their 2014 preseason schedule today, which is comprised of eight games beginning at Boston on Monday, Oct. 6, and concluding at Detroit on Thursday, Oct. 23.
The Sixers will play two games at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8 vs. Charlotte and Thursday, Oct. 16 vs. Boston while hosting two additional neutral site games against New York at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and against Orlando at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 18.
“We are extremely excited to get the season underway and see our young players in action,” said Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil. “In addition to giving our fans a chance to get an early glimpse of our exciting team this preseason, we’re thrilled to re-engage our friendly rivalry with the Knicks in Syracuse and to return to the Lehigh Valley to help open the PPL Center.”
The Sixers and Knicks meet at the Carrier Dome for the second time in three years. The game will be a homecoming for Orange products Michael Carter-Williams and Jerami Grant of the Sixers and Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks. Anthony had a game-high tying 23 points in a 98-90 loss to the Sixers in the first meeting at Syracuse on Oct. 22, 2012. The Sixers franchise played its first 14 seasons as the Syracuse Nationals, winning the NBA Championship in 1955.
The PPL Center in Allentown is a brand new facility which opens this fall and is operated by Global Spectrum. The last time the Sixers played in Allentown was on Oct. 2, 1974 in an exhibition match against the New York Nets of the ABA. Julius Erving, who was still a member of the Nets at the time, sat the game out and the Sixers won 109-89.
