Philly U’s Magee Gets Win No. 1,000

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia University men’s basketball head coach Herb Magee became the second men’s basketball coach, third overall in NCAA history, to win 1,000 career games as the Rams defeated Post 80-60 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Magee, a 2011 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, joins Tennessee Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt and Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski in the 1,000-win club. He reached the milestone in his 1,398 career game, all of them with Philadelphia University

Philadelphia improves to 15-6 overall, 9-3 against the CACC. Post is now 9-12 overall and 8-7 in conference play.

Forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) shot 7-of-16 from the field to pace the Rams with 20 points. He added six rebounds and four assists. Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) buried five of his six 3-point attempts to finish with 18 points.

Forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) poured in 17 points, while guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna). Forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) contributed 10 points, a career-high eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Post opened up a 22-11 advantage after going on an 18-4 run, capped off by two Matt Mareno free throws at the 9:53 mark. Malik Howze scored six of his eight points during the surge for the Eagles.

Gibbs put a stop to the Post run with a 3-point basket and sparked a string of 11 straight points to tie the score at 22-all. The Rams defense held the Eagles to 0-of-4 shooting and forced two turnovers during the span.

The Rams took control of the contest with the half’s final 10 points over the last 3:09 to take a 34-27 lead to the locker room. Johnson had five of the 10 points for Philadelphia, who made four of their five shots.

Philadelphia put the game away with a 25-7 run to start the second half and open up a 59-34 lead on an Alexis dunk with 11:01 to play. The Rams drained five consecutive 3-pointers during the surge, led by Schlitzer’s seven-points. Philadelphia shot 9-of-14 from the field, while Post was 1-of-11 shooting.

Post received 11 points from Brandt Voiles, Nardie Bogues, and Mareno.

For the game, Philadelphia shot 56.4 percent from the field, including a season-high 12 made 3-pointers on 22 attempts, and dished out a season-best 23 assists. The Eagles hit 38.2 percent (21-of-55) of their attempts.

Philadelphia heads to Chestnut Hill for a CACC contest on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.
