Severino Gonzalez didn’t face the best of circumstances leading up to his Major League debut. Not only did the 22-year-old have to make his first start on the road against one of the National League’s top teams in the St. Louis Cardinals with undefeated Michael Wacha opposing him, he had to do so following a game where the hometown Redbirds were already chomping at the bit after losing to the Phillies the previous night after a late Philly rally. It was going to be a tough environment for anyone taking the hill trying to beat this team twice in consecutive nights.
After retiring his first batter Jon Jay,Gonzalez allowed three straight hits led to two first-inning runs and the Cards were off and running. They’d add two more runs in the second and three more in the third, chasing before he could get out of the frame. His final line: 2.2 innings pitched, seven runs (all earned), 10 hits, two walks, zero strikeouts. The Phillies offense actually did its best to keep the game competitive by scoring twice in the third to cut the Cards’ lead to 4-2 and twice more in the fifth to get within three (7-4). But St. Louis would tack on two more in it’s half of the fifth to help halt further rallies. Freddy Galvis continued to rake with three hits and scored twice while Odubel Herrera and Chase Utley both collected two RBI. and For more on this game, click here.
