Report From Philadelphia Union
Chester, Pa. – Philadelphia Union announced Thursday defender Maurice Edu had successful surgery to repair a sports hernia and it will cause him to miss the final two games of the 2015 season. Edu will be ready for the start of the 2016 preseason.
“Mo played through a lot of pain in our run to the U.S. Open Cup Final over the last few months and we certainly commend him for that,” Union technical director Chris Albright said. “Having the surgery now ensures he’ll be ready to go come the end of January.”
Edu, 29, played and started 22 MLS games this season for the Union. He started an additional five games in the U.S. Open Cup where the Union reached the final for the second consecutive year behind the versatile captain. He spent most of the 2015 season playing center back and added one goal and one assist.
Since joining the Union prior to the 2014 season, Edu has played and started 53 games, scored four goals and added three assists. Prior to that season, the Fontana, Calif. native spent time with Rangers FC, Stoke City, Bursapor and Toronto FC.
The Philadelphia Union return to action Sunday, Oct. 18 against New York Red Bulls at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on The Comcast Network.
