GAME RECAP
PHILADELPHIA — Boston Bruins rookie forward David Pastrnak scored his first two NHL goals in the Bruins’ 3-1 defeat of the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
Chris Kelly had a shorthanded goal and Tuukka Rask made 23 saves. The Bruins have won three straight and have points in seven in a row (4-0-3).
Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers, who lost for the first time in three games. They also lost starting goaltender Steve Mason 7:07 into the game with a lower-body injury.
Mason went down to make a save on a long, bouncing shot by the Bruins’ Craig Cunningham but couldn’t get up. He was able to skate off under his own power but went immediately to the Flyers locker room. The Flyers said Mason would be evaluated further Sunday.
Ray Emery came on in relief and made 10 saves on 13 shots.
Pastrnak, the youngest player in the NHL, scored his second of the game off a give-and-go with David Krejci at 4:58 of the third to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Adam McQuaid turned a bad outlet pass by the Flyers’ Braydon Coburn into a rush back into the Philadelphia end led by Pastrnak. He dropped the puck for Krejci, who held it on the right side of the Philadelphia zone and sent it across to an open Pastrnak, who tapped it behind Emery.
Kelly scored shorthanded at 9:51 of the third to make it 3-0. Zdeno Chara won a battle behind the Boston net and sent it to Loui Eriksson on the right side of the Boston zone. He flicked it past Flyers forward Jakub Voracek to create a 2-on-1 rush that Kelly finished with a shot from the right side.
The Flyers had opportunities to get back into the game, including three straight power plays in the third. They got Giroux’s goal, a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Rask to the short side, over his blocker, but it was one of two shots they had with the extended advantages.
For the game the Flyers went 1-for-6 on the power play and had a total of four shots.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on Pastrnak’s first NHL goal. With the Bruins on a power play midway through the first period, Chara took the puck behind the Philadelphia net and sent a pass to a pinching Torey Krug. Emery made the save but Pastrnak, the Bruins’ 2014 first-round pick (No. 22) jumped into the slot and poked in the rebound at 11:33.
The Bruins preserved the lead through a scoreless second period. The Flyers had eight shots to the Bruins’ four, but couldn’t beat Rask. Their best chance came on a power play midway through the period, but Rask made two saves.
