Ryan Howard’s fourth homer of the month, a 454-blast to center field, helped lift the Phillies over the host Colorado Rockies, 4-2, Wednesday night. Howard went 3-for-4 overall on the evening, including a double, while Jeff Francoeur and Chase Utley added two hits apiece in support of rookie starter Severino Gonzalez, who earned his second win of the season. Gonzalez went five innings and allowed one earned run on five hits and zero walks. The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the first when a throwing error by Rockies pitcher Eddie Butler allowed Maikel Franco to reach first and Utley to score. Francoeur late followed with an RBI single to left. The bullpen combined to allow just one run over four innings. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 11th save with a perfect ninth.
