OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond is 10-0-1 to start his NHL career after a 2-1 shootout win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday.
Ottawa’s Bobby Ryan scored on Philadelphia goaltender Ray Emery with a shot between the pads in the third round of the shootout. Hammond sealed the win with a save on Flyers captain Claude Giroux.
Hammond has allowed two goals or less in his first 11 NHL starts, one less than the record set by Frank Brimsek of the Boston Bruins in 1938-39.
Hammond and Emery each made 27 saves in regulation and overtime.
The Senators (33-24-11) are 13-2-2 in their past 17 games and continue their push for a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
The Flyers (29-27-15) are 9-18-9 on the road.
The Senators came close to winning the game in regulation when forward Milan Michalek’s shot with about four seconds left in the third period hit the crossbar behind Emery.
The Flyers tied the game 1-1 at 12:12 of the second period when Jakub Voracek scored his 21st goal and his first at even-strength since Dec. 21, a span of 38 games.
After Flyers forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare won a puck battle along the left wing boards against Ryan, the puck came loose. Senators captain Erik Karlsson poked it away from Flyers forward Chris VandeVelde and the puck went to Voracek in the left wing circle.
It looked like Hammond misplayed the shot with his glove, and the puck went into the net over his left shoulder.
The Senators took a 1-0 lead at 5:19 of the second period when Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored his fourth goal.
It was a reward for some strong work by Pageau, Curtis Lazar and Erik Condra, which had been the Senators strongest line in the game to that point.
Lazar, whose effectiveness has been increasing over the last few weeks, used his strong skating to bull his way into the Flyers zone. The Senators got the Flyers running around a bit and the puck wound up at the right point on the stick of Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki.
Emery stopped his shot, but Pageau, as he often was in this game, was on the edge of the crease. When the rebound of Borowiecki’s shot went up in the air, Pageau swatted it out of the air with a backhand into the net.
The teams played a scoreless first period. The Senators had the better opportunities in the early going and Pageau was responsible for a couple of them.
Pageau was on the edge of the crease in the sixth minute when the puck came free, but Emery managed to get his left pad in front of the puck when Pageau tried to jam it into the net.
With Ottawa forward Mika Zibanejad off for tripping halfway through the period, Pageau broke away on a 2-on-1 with Condra. He opted to use Condra as a decoy and Emery came up with a good blocker save to stop his shot.
Hammond’s best save came against Giroux, who broke in off the left wing, but Hammond showed good patience to stop his deke attempt.
