BUFFALO — The blood clot in the lungs of Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen has cleared up, but the one in his leg has not, general manager Ron Hextall said Saturday.
“We have to get more doctors reports and then we’re going to huddle up with the doctors within the next few days and try and figure out a direction here that we’re going to take,” Hextall said.
Timonen was diagnosed with the blood clots in August and has not played this season. At 39 years old, there’s a question as to whether he’ll be able to play again this season or in his career.
Timonen has played 15 seasons in the NHL, seven with the Flyers. He has 38 goals and 207 points in his Philadelphia career. He spent his first eight seasons with the Nashville Predators.”Kimmo wants to play,” Hextall said. “If everything checks out right and he wants to play, then he can play. It’s going to come down to the risk where we are in the season and all that.
“He’s also got a decision to make too. … Even if there’s no risk and he doesn’t feel comfortable playing, then we’ll live with that. If he really wants to play and everything we hear from the [doctor] checks out, then we’ll allow him to play.”
“There’s still a chance he can play, I just don’t know how great it is or whatnot,” Hextall said. “And then again, it’s going to come down to Kimmo. Like I said, if there’s a risk, we’re not going to expose him to it.”
AKESON RECALLED
The Flyers announced this morning that they have recalled forward Jason Akeson from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Akeson averages nearly a point per-game with the Phantoms, recording eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in 19 games this season.
He began the 2014-15 season with the Flyers appearing in 12 games, going scoreless while averaging 7:36 of ice-time per-game. Akeson is in his fourth professional season with the organization, appearing in parts of the last three years with the Flyers where he has two points (1g-1a) in 14 regular season games.
He also added two goals and an assist in the Flyers’ seven-game series against the Rangers in the First Round of last year’s postseason.
