GAME RECAP

PHILADELPHIA — Brent Burns scored in the fifth round of a shootout and the San Jose Sharks beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Saturday at Wells Fargo Center.

Burns skated down the middle of the ice and beat Flyers goalie Steve Mason with a backhand shot.

Melker Karlsson also scored in the shootout for the Sharks, who improved to 4-5 in the tiebreaker.

The Sharks (37-30-8) won their second straight and moved within six points of the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division with seven games remaining.

Jakub Voracek scored in the shootout for the Flyers; they dropped to 3-10 in the shootout this season.

Philadelphia (30-30-16) remains eight points behind the Ottawa Senators for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Matt Irwin and Joe Pavelski scored in regulation for the Sharks, and goaltender Alex Stalock made 16 saves.

San Jose defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic did not play the final two periods because of an undisclosed injury.

The Flyers got goals from Michael Raffl and Claude Giroux, and Voracek had two assists. Steve Mason made 41 saves.

Philadelphia played without defensemen Mark Streit and Carlo Colaiacovo, who were out because of the flu. In their place the Flyers recalled defensemen Oliver Lauridsen and Mark Alt from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Saturday morning and had both in the lineup against the Sharks. It was Alt’s first NHL game, and Lauridsen’s first since the 2012-13 season.

The Sharks led 2-1 after two periods, but the Flyers tied the game on Giroux’s power-play goal at 8:37 of the third period. Giroux got the puck in the left circle and sent a low, hard shot that went between the legs of teammate Ryan White and past Stalock for Giroux’s 23rd of the season.

Pavelski gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 16:45 of the first period. He carried the puck behind the Flyers net, and as he came around the left side, he shot the puck off the right skate of Flyers defenseman Brandon Manning and under Mason. The referees had blown the play dead, but video review determined that the shot crossed the goal line as the culmination of a continuous play where the result was unaffected by the whistle, and the goal was allowed to stand.

Raffl tied the game for the Flyers with his 20th goal of the season. Nicklas Grossmann fired a shot from the blue line that deflected off two Sharks players in front and bounced in on Stalock. He knocked it off the post but Raffl, on the right side, banged it in at 6:44 of the first.

Irwin opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season at 4:38 of the first period. Mason stopped Chris Tierney’s shot from in close but couldn’t control the rebound. Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek tried clearing the puck but shot it right at Irwin, who fired one past Mason from above the left circle.
