Eagles Trade DT Sopoaga To Pats

By Chris McPherson, Eagles.com

The Eagles have traded defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and a 2014 sixth-round pick to New England for a 2014 fifth-round pick just minutes before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

The decision to trade Sopoaga moves rookie third-round pick Bennie Logan into the starting lineup, per the team’s unofficial depth chart. Logan has 11 tackles this year and a pair of sacks. Logan joins a pair of second-year players in ends Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton to form a talented, young group to build around. Another rookie, Damion Square, will be the backup to Logan.

Sopoaga was signed by the Eagles on the first day of free agency back in March to aid in the transition from the 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme at the all-important nose tackle position. He started in seven of the team’s first eight games this season and contributed 18 tackles, one for loss and three quarterback hurries.

After this move, the Eagles still have seven picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. They have each of their own picks in Rounds 1-5 and 7 and now have New England’s fifth-round selection.
