Eagles Sign More Draft Picks & Undrafted FA; Resign Benn

Report From Philadelphia Eagles

Arrelious Benn

After giving each other some space over the weekend, the Eagles and Arrelious Benn reunited Monday when the team re-signed the wide receiver. The 25-year-old Benn was originally acquired by the Eagles via trade in the 2013 offseason. The Eagles released Benn on Friday.

Benn suffered a torn ACL during Training Camp last summer. In his career, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound former second-round draft pick has 59 catches for 862 yards and five touchdowns in 37 games played.

After a close look at a crop of tryout players over the weekend, the Eagles identified one player worth signing to the 90-man roster: defensive back Davon Morgan.

Morgan spent the 2011 preseason in New York Jets camp and was a second-team All-ACC safety at Virginia Tech after picking off five passes and finishing second on the team in tackles. Morgan played with the Richmond Raiders of the Professional Indoor Football League last year and finished third in the league in pass breakups and fourth in tackles. The scouting report on Morgan from 2011 stated that the former Hokie was a “solid run-defending safety who is best playing downhill. Fast up the field, aggressively attacks ball carriers, and throws his shoulder pads into the action. Displays skill in zone coverage and is effective picking up assignments facing the action.”

In order to make room for Morgan on the roster, the Eagles released cornerback John Fulton, who was signed following the NFL Draft as undrafted free agent.

Jaylen Watkins & Taylor Hart

Over fifty percent of the Eagles’ 2014 draft class has now signed their rookie contracts as fourth-round pickJaylen Watkins and fifth-round pick Taylor Hart both put pen to paper on Monday afternoon. The duo of third-day picks joins third-round pick Josh Huff and seventh-round pick Beau Allen as the four rookies to have signed their rookie contracts thus far.

The Eagles took Watkins, 5-11, 194, with the first pick of the fourth round. The versatile former Florida Gator played cornerback, both inside and outside, and safety in college. General manager Howie Roseman said that Watkins is likely to focus on cornerback early in his career.

The 6-foot-6, 281-pound Hart was the first of two fifth-round picks for the Eagles and will bring toughness and familiarity to the Eagles defense after he played defensive end in Oregon’s similar 3-4 defense. His experience with defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro is also a plus.
