The Philadelphia 76ers today announced that Michael Carter-Williams has been named Kia NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for January. Carter-Williams also won the award for the combined months of October and November and joins Allen Iverson (twice in 1996-97) as the only other Sixer to be named Rookie of the Month multiple times.
In 17 games played during the month of January, Carter Williams averaged 16.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists. He scored a career-high 33 points at Cleveland on January 7, becoming the first Sixer rookie to score 30-plus points since Iverson on April 19, 1997.
Carter-Williams, who was the 11th overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2013 NBA Draft, leads all rookies in scoring (17.3 ppg), rebounding (5.4 rpg), assists (6.6 apg) and steals (2.30 spg). He is looking to become just the third player dating back to 1950-51 to lead rookies in points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game, joining Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76).
In NBA history, the only rookies to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists for an entire season are Robertson, Magic Johnson (1979-80) and Steve Francis (1999-00). The last players to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.00 steals in a single season were Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade in 2008-09.
