Freddy Galvis’ third hit of the game, a leadoff single to centerfield, sparked what the Philadelphia Phillies would call an offensive rally and the Atlanta Braves would describe as a collective breakdown on defense Friday night as the Phils eeked out a 1-0 win in what will most likely best be remembered as a pitchers’ duel, namely between the Phillies’ Aaron Harang and Atlanta’s Alex Wood. Unable to crack the scoreboard through eight innings against Wood (5.2 innings, five hits, two walks) and two relievers, the Phillies had stranded 11 base runners leading into the ninth. Following the single by Galvis, who increased his average to .345 on the evening, Caesar Hernandez laid down a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt that moved Galvis to second before a passed ball during Ben Revere’s subsequent at bat sent Galvis scrambling to third. On a 2-2 count Revere hit a high-bouncing grounder that a charging Freddie Freeman couldn’t handle at first base to score Galvis, who was off on contact. Harang tooh the no-decision, but again looked good on the hill in throwing eight scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and one walk with six strikeouts against his former club.
