Utley Reportedly Signs Extension, Details to Come from Phillies

A source told MLB.com on Wednesday evening that the Phillies and second baseman Chase Utley have reached an agreement on a contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not available by the Phillies, but reports claim the contract is for two-years and $25-$30 million, with vesting options for more years..

The Phillies and Utley have been discussing an extension for weeks, with Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. saying frequently in the past month he wanted Utley to be a “Phillie for life.”

Utley told MLB.com just before the All-Star break last month, “I’ve never envisioned wearing another team’s uniform. And I know there’s a lot of speculation, but I still haven’t … that still hasn’t changed over the last month. I’ve talked to Ruben. I’ve told him what I think about the organization and city of Philly. That’s kind of where we’re at.”

Utley said then he was open to negotiating during the season.

Utley entered Wednesday hitting .275 with 16 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, 42 RBIs and a .505 slugging percentage this season. His slugging is his best since a .508 mark in 2009. His .841 OPS is his best since a .905 mark in 2009.

If he had enough plate appearances to qualify, his OPS would rank third among 18 big league second basemen.
